The Virginia Beer Distribution Company (VBDC) is proud to celebrate an exciting milestone in Virginia’s craft beer industry! Sweetbay Brewing Company, located in the heart of Abingdon, VA, has officially become the first craft brewery licensed for self-distribution through our program. Owners Patrick and Leanne Atkins can now independently distribute their exceptional beers, expanding their reach and growing their business while sharing their craft with more Virginians.
A Small-Town Success Story
Patrick and Leanne’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and community. After settling in Washington County, they pursued their dream of opening a brewery while raising their family. Since its inception, Sweetbay Brewing has flourished alongside their son Jack, who recently turned two, and with their second child arriving in just a few weeks, their story continues to unfold with new beginnings both personally and professionally.

The VBDC was created to empower Virginia’s craft brewers by offering an alternative path to market access. Modeled after the successful Virginia Winery Distribution Company, our mission is to remove barriers to self-distribution, allowing small and independent breweries to sell directly to restaurants, grocery stores, and festivals across the Commonwealth. With this milestone achieved ahead of our original 2025 target, we are eager to welcome many more breweries into the program.
